6.6 Geometric Mean (G.M.)

Geometric mean between two numbers and inserting n G.M.s.

6.6 Geometric Mean (G.M.)

GG is a G.M. between aa and bb if a,G,ba, G, b are in G.P.:

G=±abG = \pm\sqrt{ab}

G1,…,GnG_1, \ldots, G_n are nn G.M.s between aa and bb if a,G1,…,Gn,ba, G_1, \ldots, G_n, b form a G.P.

Example 17

Insert three G.M.s between 22 and 12\dfrac{1}{2}.

Solution

2,G1,G2,G3,122, G_1, G_2, G_3, \dfrac{1}{2} is a G.P. with n=5n = 5:

12=2r4  ⟹  r4=14  ⟹  r=±12\dfrac{1}{2} = 2r^4 \implies r^4 = \dfrac{1}{4} \implies r = \pm\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}

(also complex roots ±i2\pm\dfrac{i}{\sqrt{2}}). For real r=12r = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}:

G1=2,G2=1,G3=12G_1 = \sqrt{2},\quad G_2 = 1,\quad G_3 = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}

For r=−12r = -\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}: G1=−2G_1 = -\sqrt{2}, G2=1G_2 = 1, G3=−12G_3 = -\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}.
