Sequences and series in traffic, interest, design grids, and leasing.

6.11 Real Life Problems involving Sequences and Series

Example 27 — Vehicle arrivals

Cars arrive 44 every 55 minutes: A.P. 4,8,12,…4, 8, 12, \ldots with d=4d = 4. After 11 hour (n=12n = 12): a12=48a_{12} = 48 cars.

Example 28 — Simple interest

Rs. 5000050000 at 8%8\% simple interest for 1111 years: interest A.P. 4000,8000,…4000, 8000, \ldots so a11=a_{11} = Rs. 4400044000.

Example 29 — Compound interest

Rs. 200000200000 at 5%5\% compounded annually for 1010 years: amount P(1.05)10≈P(1.05)^{10} \approx Rs. 325778.92325778.92.

Example 30 — Grid columns

1212 columns, first width 5050px, each +10+10px: S12=1260S_{12} = 1260px.

Example 31 — Motor vehicle leasing

a1=15000a_1 = 15000, d=500d = 500, n=24n = 24:

  1. a24=a_{24} = Rs. 2650026500
  2. S24=S_{24} = Rs. 498000498000
  3. Budget Rs. 400000400000 is insufficient for 2424 months.
  4. Maximum nn with Sn≤400000S_n \le 400000 is n=20n = 20.
