6.3 Arithmetic Mean (A.M.)

Arithmetic mean between two numbers and inserting n A.M.s.

6.3 Arithmetic Mean (A.M.)

AA is the A.M. between aa and bb if a,A,ba, A, b are in A.P., so

A=a+b2A = \dfrac{a + b}{2}

If A1,…,AnA_1, \ldots, A_n are nn A.M.s between aa and bb, then a,A1,…,An,ba, A_1, \ldots, A_n, b form an A.P.

Example 6

Find three A.M.s between 2\sqrt{2} and 323\sqrt{2}.

Solution

2,A1,A2,A3,32\sqrt{2}, A_1, A_2, A_3, 3\sqrt{2} is an A.P. with n=5n = 5:

32=2+4d  ⟹  d=123\sqrt{2} = \sqrt{2} + 4d \implies d = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}} A1=32,A2=22,A3=52A_1 = \dfrac{3}{\sqrt{2}},\quad A_2 = 2\sqrt{2},\quad A_3 = \dfrac{5}{\sqrt{2}}
