Solution

🟡 Exam-style · [5 marks] The line $y = x + 1$ meets the curve $y = 2x^2 - 3x - 5$ at the points $A$ and $B$. Find the coordinates of $A$ and $B$, and find the exact length of $AB$.

Solution

2x2−3x−5=x+12x2−4x−6=0x2−2x−3=0(x−3)(x+1)=0\begin{aligned} 2x^2 - 3x - 5 &= x + 1 \\ 2x^2 - 4x - 6 &= 0 \\ x^2 - 2x - 3 &= 0 \\ (x - 3)(x + 1) &= 0 \end{aligned}

So x=−1x = -1 or x=3x = 3. Using the line, A(−1, 0)A(-1,\ 0) and B(3, 4)B(3,\ 4).

AB=(3−(−1))2+(4−0)2=16+16=32=42AB = \sqrt{(3 - (-1))^2 + (4 - 0)^2} = \sqrt{16 + 16} = \sqrt{32} = 4\sqrt{2}
