8.1.6 If Two Arcs of a Circle (or of Congruent Circles) are Congruent, then the Corresponding Chords are Equal.

In the circle with centre OO, APB^≅CQD^\widehat{APB} \cong \widehat{CQD} and AB‾\overline{AB}, CD‾\overline{CD} are their corresponding chords, then AB‾≅CD‾\overline{AB} \cong \overline{CD}

[Diagram: congruent arcs APB^\widehat{APB}, CQD^\widehat{CQD} with chords AB‾\overline{AB}, CD‾\overline{CD}]

Example 8

In a circular garden, two pair of decorative lights are placed such that the arcs between each pair (AA and BB, CC and DD) are equal in length. If the straight-line distance between points AA and BB is 88 metres, what is the distance points CC and DD?

Solution Given that

mAB‾=8 metresm\overline{AB} = 8 \text{ metres}

Since the arcs ABAB and CDCD are congruent, so their chords must be equal.

mAB‾=mCD‾m\overline{AB} = m\overline{CD}

Hence, mCD‾=8m\overline{CD} = 8 m
