MATH FOR AI•Probability•Common Distributions•3.2 The Gaussian

Introduction

The univariate and multivariate Gaussian distributions and how the mean and covariance shape them.

Introduction

The Gaussian (normal) distribution is the most important distribution in ML. It appears naturally whenever many small independent effects add up (central limit theorem), it has simple formulas for almost every operation, and it is the default model for noise. Linear regression, Gaussian processes, VAEs, diffusion models and Kalman filters are all built on it.

Discuss theoretical concepts, mathematical formulas, and architectural foundations.
