MATH FOR AI•Linear Algebra•Matrices•2.3 Matrices as Transformations

Introduction

A matrix moves vectors: scaling, rotation, shear, reflection, and composition as multiplication.

Introduction

So far a matrix has been a table of numbers. The deeper view: a matrix is a machine that moves vectors. Feed in x\mathbf{x}, get out AxA\mathbf{x}. Applied to every point of the plane at once, a matrix stretches, rotates, shears or flips the whole grid. This picture is the key to understanding eigenvectors, SVD and neural networks.
