Introduction

The trace of a matrix, its properties such as cyclic invariance, and the characteristic polynomial.

Introduction

The trace is the simplest number you can read off a square matrix: the sum of its diagonal. Despite being so simple, it is basis-independent, it equals the sum of the eigenvalues, and it turns up constantly in matrix calculus and statistics. Together with the determinant it builds the characteristic polynomial — the bridge to eigenvalues.
