MACHINE LEARNING•Supervised Learning•Linear Regression•3.2 The Normal Equation

Introduction

A direct formula that computes the best linear-regression parameters in one step, and why it becomes slow with many features.

Introduction

For most models, finding the best parameters means a long search. Linear regression with MSE is special: there's a formula that gives the answer directly, like solving 2x = 6 by dividing both sides by 2 instead of guessing values of x.

That formula is called the Normal Equation. This topic explains what it computes, how to use it, and when it's the wrong tool.

Discuss theoretical concepts, mathematical formulas, and architectural foundations.
