1.2 Radical Expressions

If nn is a positive integer greater than 1 and aa is a real number, then any real number xx such that x=anx = \sqrt[n]{a} is called nthn^{th} root of aa.

Here, a\sqrt{\phantom{a}} is called radical and nn is the index of radical. A real number under the radical sign is called a radicand. 5\sqrt{5}, 73\sqrt[3]{7} are the examples of radical form.

Exponential form of x=anx = \sqrt[n]{a} is x=(a)1nx = (a)^{\frac{1}{n}}.
