Slope, parallel/perpendicular lines, and standard forms of the line equation.

7.2 Equations of Straight Lines

Inclination of a Line: The angle α\alpha (0∘<α<180∘0^\circ < \alpha < 180^\circ) is measured counterclockwise from positive xx-axis to a non-horizontal straight line ℓ\ell is called the inclination of ℓ\ell.

[Diagram showing inclination of line]

Observe that the angle α\alpha in the different positions of the line ℓ\ell is α,0∘\alpha, 0^\circ and 90∘90^\circ respectively.

Note:
(i) If ℓ\ell is parallel to xx-axis, then α=0∘\alpha = 0^\circ
(ii) If ℓ\ell is parallel to yy-axis, then α=90∘\alpha = 90^\circ
