17.11 AC Through RL-Series Circuit

Consider an AC circuit containing a resistor RR and inductor LL connected in series with an AC source VV as shown in Fig. 17.10(a). As RR and LL are in series, therefore, same current II flows through both RR and LL. I=Iosin⁡θI = I_{o} \sin\theta

(Fig. 17.10 (a): RL series circuit connected with A.C. supply)

(Fig. 17.10 (b): Voltage and Current waveform in of RL series circuit.)

Let rms value of current through RR is II. Then rms value of voltage VRV_{R} across RR will be: VR=IrmsRV_{R} = I_{\mathrm{rms}} R VV will be in phase with the current II in the circuit, as RR is shown vectorially by line OA in Fig. 17.10(c). The value of rms voltage VLV_{L} across LL will be: VL=IrmsXLV_{L} = I_{\mathrm{rms}} X_{L} Voltage VV across LL is ahead of current II through LL by 90∘90^{\circ} as shown in Fig. 17.10 (b) and vectorially by line OB in Fig. 17.10(c). The resultant voltage VV will be the vector sum of VRV_{R} and VLV_{L} shown vectorially by line OP, thus in Fig. 17.10(c): Vrms=VR2+VL2V_{\mathrm{rms}} = \sqrt{V_{R}^{2} + V_{L}^{2}} Vrms=(IrmsR2)+(IrmsXL2)V_{\mathrm{rms}} = \sqrt{(I_{\mathrm{rms}} R^{2}) + (I_{\mathrm{rms}} X_{L}^{2})} As XL=ωLX_{L} = \omega L , so Vrms=IrmsR2+(ωL)2V_{\mathrm{rms}} = I_{\mathrm{rms}}\sqrt{R^{2} + (\omega L)^{2}} Impedance

Z=VrmsIrms=R2+(ωL)2…(17.23)Z = \frac{V_{\mathrm{rms}}}{I_{\mathrm{rms}}} = \sqrt{R^{2} + (\omega L)^{2}} \ldots (17.23)

Angle θ=tan⁡−1(ωLR)\theta = \tan^{-1}\left(\dfrac{\omega L}{R}\right) The angle θ\theta which ZZ makes with RR line, gives the phase difference between the applied voltage and current.
