11.2 Even and Odd Functions

Even and odd trigonometric functions and their fundamental periods.

11.2 Even and Odd Functions

  • Even: f(−x)=f(x)f(-x) = f(x) (graph symmetric about the yy-axis). Example: x2x^2; also cos⁡θ\cos\theta.
  • Odd: f(−x)=−f(x)f(-x) = -f(x) (symmetric about the origin). Example: x3x^3; also sin⁡θ\sin\theta.

cos⁡(−θ)=cos⁡θ\cos(-\theta) = \cos\theta (even); sin⁡(−θ)=−sin⁡θ\sin(-\theta) = -\sin\theta (odd). For each xx in the domain, −x-x must also be in the domain.
