3.5 Real World Problems of Quadratic Equations and Inequalities

Real-world problems leading to quadratic equations and inequalities.

3.5 Real World Problems of Quadratic Equations and Inequalities

Problems that lead to quadratic equations in one variable are solved by:

  1. Letting the unknown(s) be xx (or yy, etc.).
  2. Translating the problem into symbols and forming the equation or inequality from the given conditions.

Example 9

The length of a room is 33 metres greater than its breadth. If the area is 180180 square metres, find the length and breadth.

Solution

Let breadth =x= x metres and length =(x+3)= (x + 3) metres. Then

x(x+3)=180x2+3x−180=0(x+15)(x−12)=0x=−15orx=12\begin{align*} x(x + 3) &= 180 \\ x^2 + 3x - 180 &= 0 \\ (x + 15)(x - 12) &= 0 \\ x &= -15 \quad \text{or} \quad x = 12 \end{align*}

Breadth cannot be negative, so x=12x = 12. Length =15= 15 metres.

Hence breadth =12= 12 m and length =15= 15 m.

Example 10

A company manufactures laptops with weekly profit function (in thousands of dollars) P(x)=−x2+2x+3P(x) = -x^2 + 2x + 3, where xx is the number of laptops produced (in hundreds). Find the range of production levels where the company makes at least \4000$ profit.

Solution

We need P(x)≥4P(x) \ge 4:

−x2+2x+3≥4−x2+2x−1≥0x2−2x+1≤0(x−1)2≤0\begin{align*} -x^2 + 2x + 3 &\ge 4 \\ -x^2 + 2x - 1 &\ge 0 \\ x^2 - 2x + 1 &\le 0 \\ (x - 1)^2 &\le 0 \end{align*}

This holds only when (x−1)2=0(x - 1)^2 = 0, i.e. x=1x = 1.

The company makes exactly \4000profitwhenprofit when100laptopsareproduced( laptops are produced (x = 1).Thereisnoproductionlevelwhereprofitexceeds). There is no production level where profit exceeds $4000$.
