7.4 Combinations

A combination of rr objects from nn is a subset of size rr (order does not matter).

nCr=C(n,r)=(nr)=n!r!(n−r)!{}^n C_r = C(n,r) = \binom{n}{r} = \dfrac{n!}{r!(n-r)!}

Proof. Each combination of rr objects yields r!r! permutations, so nCr⋅r!=nPr{}^n C_r \cdot r! = {}^n P_r.

Corollaries: nCn=1{}^n C_n = 1, nC0=1{}^n C_0 = 1.
