Case III: Non-Repeated Irreducible Quadratic Factors
A quadratic factor is irreducible if it cannot be written as a product of linear factors with real coefficients (e.g. x2+x+1, x2+3).
For each non-repeated irreducible factor ax2+bx+c, include a term
ax2+bx+cAx+B
Example 6
Resolve (x2+1)(x+3)3x−11 into partial fractions.
Solution
(x2+1)(x+3)3x−11=x2+1Ax+B+x+3C
3x−11=(Ax+B)(x+3)+C(x2+1)
x=−3 ⇒ C=−2. Equating coefficients: A=2, B=−3.
Hence x2+12x−3−x+32.
Example 7
Resolve x4+2x2+94x2+8x into partial fractions.
Solution
x4+2x2+9=(x2+2x+3)(x2−2x+3), so
(x2+2x+3)(x2−2x+3)4x2+8x=x2+2x+3Ax+B+x2−2x+3Cx+D
Equating coefficients yields A=1, B=2, C=−1, D=−2.
Hence
x2+2x+3x+2+x2−2x+3−x−2
