4.6 Elementary Row Operations

Elementary row operations, triangular matrices, echelon forms, inverse by rows, and rank.

4.6 Elementary Row Operations

Elementary operations on equations (swap, scale by nonzero kk, add multiple of one equation to another) correspond to row operations on matrices:

  • Ri↔RjR_i \leftrightarrow R_j
  • kRi→Ri′kR_i \rightarrow R'_i (k≠0k \neq 0)
  • Ri+kRj→Ri′R_i + kR_j \rightarrow R'_i

If BB is obtained from AA by finitely many row operations, write A≅BA \cong B (equivalent matrices).

Upper triangular: aij=0a_{ij} = 0 for all i>ji > j.

Lower triangular: aij=0a_{ij} = 0 for all i<ji < j.

Triangular: upper or lower. Diagonal matrices are both.
