13.3 Notation and First Principles

With y=f(x)y = f(x) and δy=f(x+δx)−f(x)\delta y = f(x+\delta x) - f(x):

dydx=lim⁡δx→0δyδx=f′(x)\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \lim_{\delta x \to 0} \dfrac{\delta y}{\delta x} = f'(x)

dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} is a single symbol (not a quotient). Other notations: Leibniz dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx}, Lagrange f′(x)f'(x), Euler Df(x)Df(x).

Alternate form at x=ax = a:

f′(a)=lim⁡x→af(x)−f(a)x−af'(a) = \lim_{x \to a} \dfrac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a}
