Solution

Write the equation $\operatorname{Arg}\left(\dfrac{z-2+i}{-2-2i}\right)=\dfrac{2\pi}{3}$ in cartesian form, if $z=x+iy$.

Solution

Given:

Arg⁡(z−2+i−2−2i)=2π3,z=x+iy\operatorname{Arg}\left(\frac{z-2+i}{-2-2i}\right)=\frac{2\pi}{3},\quad z=x+iy

Write:

z−2+i=(x−2)+i(y+1)z-2+i=(x-2)+i(y+1)

Also, for −2−2i-2-2i (Quadrant III):

Arg⁡(−2−2i)=5π4\operatorname{Arg}(-2-2i)=\frac{5\pi}{4}

Using Arg⁡(AB)=Arg⁡(A)−Arg⁡(B)\operatorname{Arg}\left(\frac{A}{B}\right)=\operatorname{Arg}(A)-\operatorname{Arg}(B) (mod 2π2\pi):

Arg⁡(z−2+i)−5π4=2π3\operatorname{Arg}(z-2+i)-\frac{5\pi}{4}=\frac{2\pi}{3}

So:

Arg⁡(z−2+i)=2π3+5π4=23π12\operatorname{Arg}(z-2+i)=\frac{2\pi}{3}+\frac{5\pi}{4}=\frac{23\pi}{12}

Hence:

tan⁡23π12=y+1x−2\tan\frac{23\pi}{12}=\frac{y+1}{x-2}

Now:

tan⁡23π12=tan⁡(2π−π12)=−tan⁡π12=−(2−3)=3−2\tan\frac{23\pi}{12}=\tan\left(2\pi-\frac{\pi}{12}\right)=-\tan\frac{\pi}{12}=-(2-\sqrt{3})=\sqrt{3}-2

Therefore:

y+1x−2=3−2\frac{y+1}{x-2}=\sqrt{3}-2 y=(3−2)x−23+3\boxed{y=(\sqrt{3}-2)x-2\sqrt{3}+3}
