Solution
Intellectual Property (IP) refers to legal rights that protect creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, symbols, names, and images used in commerce. These rights let creators control and profit from their work.
Patents
A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention—a product or process that provides a new way of doing something or a new technical solution. Others cannot make, use, or sell the invention without permission. Example: a Pakistani engineer patents a more efficient solar panel so only he can manufacture and sell it in Pakistan for a certain number of years. Protection: apply through IPO Pakistan.
Trademarks
A trademark is a sign, logo, or name that distinguishes one company's goods or services from others. It helps consumers identify the source and builds brand recognition. Example: the logo of National Foods on spices and sauces. Protection: register the brand name, logo, or slogan.
Copyrights
Copyright protects literary and artistic works such as books, music, films, paintings, and software. The creator has exclusive rights to use, distribute, and license the work and to stop copying without permission. Example: a Pakistani author's novel—only the author may publish, sell, or adapt it into a movie. Protection: register creative works with the appropriate authority.
Industrial designs
Industrial design rights protect the visual design of objects that are not purely utilitarian: shape, configuration, and aesthetic aspects. Example: a unique bottle shape for mineral water designed in Karachi; no other company can use the same bottle shape.
Trade secrets
A trade secret is confidential information that gives a business a competitive edge. Unlike patents, trade secrets are not disclosed to the public. Example: the recipe for Pakola. Protection: keep the information confidential and use legal agreements rather than registering it with the IPO.
IP matters because it lets inventors and artists profit from their work, which encourages new ideas and innovation. Pakistan's Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) registers and protects these rights.
