17.1 Magnetic Effects of Steady Current

Magnetic field around straight wires and solenoids, right-hand grip rule, and forces between parallel conductors.

17.1 Magnetic Effects of Steady Current

A steady electric current in a conductor generates a magnetic field around it. This was discovered by Hans Christian Oersted. When a current-carrying wire passes through a cardboard sheet, compass needles placed around it align themselves along circular magnetic field lines.
