2.3 Relationship Between the Roots and Coefficients of a Quadratic Equation

The standard form of a quadratic equation is ax2+bx+c=0,a≠0ax^2 + bx + c = 0, a \neq 0 and a,b,c∈Ra, b, c \in R.

The roots of this equation are:

−b+b2−4ac2a\dfrac{-b + \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} and −b−b2−4ac2a\dfrac{-b - \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}

Let these roots be α,β\alpha, \beta

α=−b+b2−4ac2a,β=−b−b2−4ac2a\alpha = \dfrac{-b + \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}, \beta = \dfrac{-b - \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}

Now S=S = Sum of the roots =α+β= \alpha + \beta

=−b+b2−4ac2a+−b−b2−4ac2a= \dfrac{-b + \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} + \dfrac{-b - \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} =−b+b2−4ac−b−b2−4ac2a=−2b2a=−ba= \dfrac{-b + \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac} - b - \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} = \dfrac{-2b}{2a} = \dfrac{-b}{a}

S=S = Sum of the roots =−Coefficient of xCoefficient of x2= -\dfrac{\text{Coefficient of } x}{\text{Coefficient of } x^2}

P=P = Product of the roots =αβ= \alpha\beta

=(−b+b2−4ac2a)(−b−b2−4ac2a)= \left(\dfrac{-b + \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}\right)\left(\dfrac{-b - \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}\right) =(−b)2−(b2−4ac)2(2a)(2a)=b2−(b2−4ac)4a2= \dfrac{(-b)^2 - (\sqrt{b^2 - 4ac})^2}{(2a)(2a)} = \dfrac{b^2 - (b^2 - 4ac)}{4a^2} =b2−b2+4ac4a2=4ac4a2=ca= \dfrac{b^2 - b^2 + 4ac}{4a^2} = \dfrac{4ac}{4a^2} = \dfrac{c}{a}

P=P = Product of the roots =ca=Constant termCoefficient of x2= \dfrac{c}{a} = \dfrac{\text{Constant term}}{\text{Coefficient of } x^2}

Important Note!
(i) The standard form of a quadratic equation is ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0 where a≠0a \neq 0 and a,b,c∈Ra, b, c \in R.
(ii) Sum of the roots =−ba= \dfrac{-b}{a}, Product of the roots =ca= \dfrac{c}{a}
(iii) When the coefficient of x2x^2 in a quadratic equation is unity (one).

  • Sum of roots is equal to the coefficient of xx with sign changed.
  • Product of the roots is equal to the constant term.
    (iv) If the constant term of ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0 is zero, then sum of its roots =−ba= \dfrac{-b}{a} and products of the roots =0= 0.

Example 9

Find the sum and the product of the roots of the equation 3x2+5x−12=03x^2 + 5x - 12 = 0 without solving.

Solution Standard form of the quadratic equation is ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0, where a≠0a \neq 0 and a,b,c∈Ra, b, c \in R. The given equation is 3x2+5x−12=03x^2 + 5x - 12 = 0.

Here a=3,b=5,c=−12a = 3, b = 5, c = -12

S=S = Sum of the roots =−ba=−53= -\dfrac{b}{a} = -\dfrac{5}{3}

P=P = Product of the roots =ca=−123=−4= \dfrac{c}{a} = \dfrac{-12}{3} = -4

Example 10

Find the sum and the product of the roots of the quadratic equation x2+6x+8=0x^2 + 6x + 8 = 0

Solution Coefficient of x2x^2 is unity.

Sum of the roots =−6= -6 [Coefficient of xx with sign changed]

Product of the roots =8= 8 [Constant term]
